The labour minister of Sweden declared on July 3, 2024, that there is an immediate demand for foreign labourers in the fields of healthcare, education, security, and equipment repair. A survey by the European Labour Authority identified 20 occupations that are experiencing a shortage, such as security guards, teachers, doctors, engineers, and bus drivers. Foreign workers now have more options in a variety of fields, including nursing, dentistry, psychology, mechanics, systems analysis, law enforcement, and water treatment operations. These shortfalls point to a high need for foreign nationals with the necessary skills to fill pivotal roles that will support the smooth operation of vital services and advance the Swedish economy as a whole.
Portugal, with one of Europe’s oldest populations, is experiencing significant labour shortages in food and hospitality, manufacturing, agriculture, healthcare, and IT sectors. Eurostat reports that the elderly population increased from 23.7% in 2022 to 24% in 2023, worsening the issue. Recent data shows a projected decline in unemployment rates due to migration. The European Labour Authority lists 31 high-demand professions. Foreign workers, especially in roles like garden labourers, truck drivers, welders, plumbers, IT specialists, healthcare professionals, and hospitality staff, have improved chances of securing work visas in Portugal.
