The Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) allows Canadian employers to hire foreign workers if no Canadians are available for the job.

The Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) allows Canadian employers to hire foreign workers if no Canadians are available for the job. Employers need a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) to show that hiring a foreign worker won’t hurt the Canadian job market. Recently, the government made two changes:

  1. They stopped processing LMIAs for low-wage jobs.
  2. They raised the pay requirement for high-wage jobs to 20% above the average wage for that job in the area.

These changes are part of Canada’s plan to improve immigration and prevent fraud. The government plans to give out 82,000 new work permits by 2025.
