Starting August 28, 2024,
people in Canada on visitor visas cannot apply for work permits without leaving
the country. This rule was introduced in 2020 during COVID-19 to help visitors
and fill job shortages. It was supposed to end in February 2025, but Canada’s
immigration department ended it early to control temporary residents and
protect the system. However, if someone applied for a work permit before August
28, their application will still be processed. The change also aims to stop
fraud, as some people were using the system to trick foreign workers into
working without permission.
