September 3, 2024, new regulations will improve conditions for gig workers in
British Columbia, including those in ride-hailing and food delivery. These
regulations set a new minimum wage and cover expenses for using personal
vehicles—$0.45 per kilometer for ride-hailing and $0.35 for deliveries. Workers
will also keep all their tips. Additionally, companies must provide transparent
estimated earnings, detailed wage statements, and disclose job locations before
workers accept assignments. The rules also require companies to give reasons
for suspensions or terminations and decide on reinstating or terminating workers’
accounts within 14 days.
