ECR (Emigration Check Required) passports are required for Indian nationals who wish to work abroad, and they must also obtain emigration clearance from the Office of the Protector of Emigrants before entering certain nations.

Emigration Clearance Required (ECR) passport holders are required to travel to 18 countries. ECR passports are only valid for employment visas to these 18 countries, not for travel to the USA, Canada, or Europe. ECR passport holders can apply for jobs in London, depending on their visa class and can also travel there. Canada is not among the countries that require ECR passports, so those with PR status can travel to Canada with an ECR Indian passport.

10 differences between ECR and non-ECR or ECNR (Emigration Check Not Required) passports include:

1.       Education Requirements: ECR passport holders have not completed education beyond the tenth grade, whereas non-ECR passport holders have.

2.       Emigration Clearance: In order to work in some countries, holders of ECR passports must have an emigration clearance certificate; non-ECR passport holders do not.

3.       Countries for Emigration: While non-ECR passport holders are exempt from these checks, ECR passport holders must undergo them in order to work in ECR countries.

4.       Passport Stamping: Non-ECR passports do not have the "Emigration Check Required" stamp that is typically found on ECR passports.

5.       Professional qualifications: People with particular professional qualifications are given non-ECR passports, which make it easier for them to travel for business.

6.       Visa applications: Some nations demand additional documentation from ECR passport holders during the visa application process, but not from non-ECR passport holders.

7.       Employment Abroad: Compared to non-ECR passport holders, ECR passport holders may be subject to more scrutiny and documentation requirements when looking for work abroad.

8.       Skill Levels: Due to their education or qualifications, non-ECR passport holders are frequently thought to have higher skill levels, which could result in better employment opportunities.

9.       Employment Possibilities: Since emigration checks do not apply to non-ECR passport holders, they have access to a wider variety of employment opportunities.

10.   Emigration Policy: India’s emigration policy, which aims to ensure the safety and protection of its citizens working abroad, is primarily related to the distinction between ECR and Non-ECR.
